Chapter One

In Which Luca and Her Siblings Are Born

B-dropcap.jpg

efore she was one of the top fighters in the world, before the glitz and the fame and the packed stadiums, before she was a big star—the one and only Luchazorra—she was Luz "Luca" O’Reilly Morales. A humble little fox born in the churchyard next to Teatro Juárez in Guanajuato in November 1932.

You’ve probably heard the rumors of her birth. That she was not born as you or I were. That instead she appeared in Tenochtitlán at the top of the ruins, the true return of the god Quetzalcóatl. That’s fun and all, and the costumes inspired by it were excellent for the ring, like this one:

But that wasn’t how it happened. Maybe in some ways she was the return of an ancient deity, but the way it really happened is a bit less dramatic. She was just a simple newborn pup on a simple morning after Day of the Dead. Underneath the altar, surrounded by still-lit candles and candy skulls, she and her two siblings drifted into this world, unaware of the adventures life had in store for them.
